Illinois Extension is part of state and national efforts to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus losses from Illinois’ lands and facilities to its waters. Extension staff support the Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy as facilitators, coordinators, communicators, and watershed educators.

We connect communities and leaders with water quality research and management and research specialists, ensuring science-based, trusted resources are available to professionals and communities throughout Illinois. Extension’s outreach team provides education statewide about nutrient loss and water quality issues, solutions, research, management, and more. We offer targeted services to Illinois priority watersheds and coordinate watershed-based planning and implementation of strategy components. We provide public education through programming and publications designed to educate Illinois stakeholders about nutrient pollution and best management practice solutions reaching rural and urban communities throughout Illinois.

Alongside the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Illinois Department of Agriculture, we also coordinate collaborative working groups to address nutrient pollution in Illinois.

For questions about NLRS working groups, contact our team at NLRS@illinois.edu. For all other inquiries, please reach out to a team member.
