{salutation}

In a past Data Nudge, we talked about why and when to publish your data which highlights the importance of data sharing in research. Since the new National Institute of Health (NIH)'s data sharing policy went into effect in January 2023, we want to focus specifically on NIH's expectations of when you should share scientific data.

this is an image of two horses are racing toward the finish line

NIH expects scientific data to be made available by the earlier of these two events:

  • The time of an associated peer-reviewed publication.
  • The end of the award/project period.

We have created a decision tree to make it easier for you to decide when to publish scientific data.

Other grant-funding agencies may have different expectations for when to share scientific data.
