The Research Data Service developed a Risk Assessment Activity to support users in assessing the value of their data and identify the risks they face if not stored properly. We encourage you to consider the following: 

Value Assessment 

1. Is this research funded?
2. Is this research published?
3. Is this research unique or valuable?
4. 
   

Risk Assessment 

1. Are there multiple copies of the data?
2. Is the data in danger of exceeding the available storage space?
3. Can the data only be opened with special tools that you may lose access to?

Practical Ways to Prevent Data Loss

1. Document your data with a ReadMe file, data dictionary, or codebook.
2. Submit your data to a repository or archive for long-term preservation.
3. Save 3 copies of important files in 2 locations with 1 copy stored remotely.
