Data sharing is an important step in the research process and is often required by funding agencies and journal publishers. Use the following checklist to make sure you are ready to share your data.

 
 

Checklist for sharing data publicly:

☐ Remove all private, confidential, or other legally protected information.
☐ Evaluate file format considerations for data sharing.
☐ Create file names that are consistent, unique, easy, and meaningful. 
☐ Describe variables in the documentation appropriately.
☐ Ensure documentation is complete (e.g., README.txt, data dictionary/codebook).
☐ Verify data collection and analysis are complete and ready to be distributed.
☐ Confirm data is allowed to be shared publicly.
☐ Choose an appropriate data repository for submission*.
