On behalf of the Women and Gender in Global Perspectives Program (WGGP) at the University of Illinois, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the new semester.

Since 1980, WGGP (formerly Women in International Development (WID)) has had as our goal encouraging and facilitating research, instruction, and service focused on human development and gender equity.  Our Faculty Affiliates from across campus comprise a rich community of scholars with expertise in these areas.  The complete list of Faculty Affiliates is located on the People page of our website.

Over 136 graduate students have been involved with WGGP through what was originally a certificate program and is now a graduate minor on Gender Relations in International Development (GRID).  September 20^th we will host our WGGP Student Symposium showcasing the research of our graduate students. For more information about our GRID minor, please look under the Academics page. During the 2017-2018 AY, we will also be highlighting GRID alum on our website, in our weekly newsletter and on social media. 

Our program strives to engage students, faculty as well as community members through lectures, brown bags, and symposia. On the Home page of our website, you will find upcoming events that we are hosting or co-sponsoring. 

WGGP has received a generous estate provision to make a gift to support an endowment for a graduate student fellowship and programming.  Professor Emerita Barbara A. Yates’ bequest will create the Barbara A. Yates Graduate Fellowship and Barbara A. Yates WGGP Program Series.  The Barbara A. Yates Graduate Fellowship will provide the awardee with financial support plus tuition and fee waiver for an academic year.  The Barbara A. Yates WGGP Program Series will provide support for lectures, workshops, and conferences on gender equity.   Barbara was the founding Director of WGGP and recently passed away on August 11, 2017.  Barbara has made a lasting impact on our campus and future scholars with her generous endowment.  You can learn more about Barbara and her impact through the WILL interview I did with Brian Moline on August 16^th here.

Fellowship for tenured professors who will have a paid sabbatical for the 2018-2019 academic year.

The International Affairs Fellowship for Tenured International Relations Scholars offers tenured professors of U.S. foreign policy and international relations direct experience in the foreign policymaking field through placement in a U.S. government agency or international organization for a period of twelve months. The program will match 50% of the fellow’s base salary for the academic year at their university (up to a maximum of $80,000 for the year).

The fellowship is open to tenured professors who hold a PhD, have arranged a paid sabbatical with their home university, propose to work on peace and security issues, and have never worked at a U.S. government agency or an international organization.

The Verdell Frazier Young Award was established to assist women who have had an interruption in pursuing a college degree. Awards are available for Fall, Spring and Summer. Individual applicants can be awarded for two semesters within a given degree program. The application is currently open and must be submitted by Friday, September 1st at 5pm for full consideration.

WGGP offers a graduate minor in Gender Relations in International Development (GRID). The GRID interdisciplinary minor is designed to give students the analytical and empirical skills needed to address global human security and gender equity issues in research and policy analysis, as well as daily life. In this age of global economic transformation, it is especially necessary for researchers and practitioners to examine who gains and who loses from new policies, to assess the disparities in the impacts of reforms on women, men, and children, and to study the successful strategies and policies that appear.
