On a very snowy January 15, Chancellor Robert J. Jones welcomed over 300 Illini — students, faculty, staff and administration — as well as members of our broader community to the 2018 MLK Day of Service.  To extend this welcome, OVP wishes to share Chancellor Jones' opening remarks here.

OVP Service Saturdays!!

Spend the morning volunteering on campus and around the local community.  Meet at the Illini Union (for coffee and bagels) and back by noon. A partnership of OVP, DRES, and Common Ground Food Cooperative. We make every effort to be accessible for all students.

 
 
Saturday, February 10, 8:00am – 11:30am

OVP Staff will lead a local service project at Busey Park as part of the Stewardship Saturdays program of Urbana Parks District. Activities will include removal of honeysuckle & other invasive brush from natural areas. This will include: cutting, pulling, hauling, and stacking brush. Please dress accordingly. Tools, gloves, instruction, and refreshments will be provided.

Spend the day in Chicago and help out with much needed maintenance at a residential home for the elderly. Sample Chicago pizza and visit the Navy Pier. Get a photo at the Bean and end the day at the Chicago Art Institute. Registration opening soon!

Regularly Needed Volunteer Opportunities

We are looking for native Chinese speakers to participate in our semester-long Chinese pair tutoring program. Our program pairs each volunteer with a U of I student who is currently learning Chinese. Each volunteer is expected to contribute 1-2 hours per week tutoring the student. The times and locations are very flexible and can be arranged by the volunteer tutor and their peer student. School Tour Volunteer Orientation at APNC

Hone your natural history knowledge and leadership skills, and make a difference to more than 3,000 children who visit the nature center each year. Share the excitement of teaching while exploring Busey Woods and Meadowbrook Prairie. Volunteers learn to guide many fun and easy nature activities as they lead tours at these sites. To be a volunteer, you must be 18+ and available on a weekday morning or afternoon. Register at least two days before the orientation, or arrange an alternate orientation time by calling 217-384-4062 or contacting hjvasel@urbanaparks.org.

SOAR tutoring is schedule for TWR from 2-3:15pm for 10 weeks from 2/13 to 4/26. Illinois students are paired with a child during that time and are asked to commit once a week during that time, but can choose to volunteer more than once a week if they want to. SOAR tutoring includes reading, homework assistance, and social activities with the child. Spanish-speaking skills are not necessary in order to participate. Tutors will need to complete a background check through the Champaign School District. The SOAR program coordinator will provide the clearance form for the tutors. This opportunity is especially interesting to Illinois students who want to gain cross-cultural awareness and relationship skills. DREAAM Needs After-School Volunteers! - until 5/15

DREAAM House greatly needs after-school volunteers to assist DREAAM teachers in their mission to reach, teach, and invest in at-risk boys. Volunteer duties include: tutoring and homework assistance, helping with art projects, and leading small group social-emotional learning activities for kids K-5th grade. We ask that you make a minimum 1-hour commitment each week to the program. Please contact Mr. Tracy at tracy@dreaam.org to sign up or with any questions!

Internships, Scholarships, and Beyond

Are you stuck and don't know what to do for spring break this year? Join us for a week of volunteering and fun over spring break! We will be traveling to Hattiesburg, Mississippi and Fairfield, Alabama from March 18th-24th and volunteering at the local affiliates.
